Claudia Claremi’s multimedia project La memoria de las frutas (The Memory of Fruits) explores the emotional and sensory connections people have with Caribbean fruits.
The work forms a living archive of memories through hand-processed 16mm film showing gesturing hands recalling fruits like mangoes, soursops, guavas, etc., combined with fragments of oral testimonies. Participants trace the shape, smell, and texture of the fruits —without them ever being shown. By centering the tactile and gestural rather than the visual display of the fruits, Claremi subverts conventional tropical imagery challenging botanical, colonial or commercial representations.
The project also reflects on themes such as migration, industrial agriculture, and the disappearance of fruit trees from daily life in the Caribbean. Developed across the region and its diasporas, it builds a collective narrative that reveals the structural causes of cultural disconnection—while honoring the fruits and the memories they hold.
